Ani-Connect Announced! – CALLing for Participants for the Pre-Event “Animation training”

  • An online animation training for those who want to express their ideas through animation.
  • Wouldn’t it be great if you could express your ideas and thoughts using a method you are good at?
  • Animated Learning Lab proposes: Let’s convey your ideas through animation!
  • To express your thoughts and ideas, it helps to have basic knowledge and skills in creating animation and video.
  • You might wonder: “Since we can easily make animations using generative AI or tutorial videos, do we really need a training taught by professionals?”
  • At the Ani-Connect Animation Training, which is taught by professional animation creator(s), you will learn the basics of animation—with a strong focus on the difference between ‘conveying’ and ‘actually getting the message across’—and get hands-on experience creating stop-motion animation.
  • Even if you are not good at drawing or have no prior experience making animations, this training is designed to be fun and accessible for everyone.

Ani-Connect Animation Training Overview

  • Dates:
    • Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9, 2026
    • Please note that attendance is required for both days.

    • Online (via Zoom).
  • Participation at free.
  • Capacity: 30 participants. Registration will close once full.
    • First-come, first-served basis, but priority will be given to those who also wish to participate in the main Ani-Connect Workshop.

  • Eligibility (Who can participate):
    • ●High school students or individuals aged 15–18 living in Japan (regardless of nationality or roots).
    • ●Japanese language learners living inside or outside Japan (from junior high school to university student age; international students are also welcome to apply).
    • Must be able to attend both days.
    • Since this training focuses on stop-motion animation using physical objects, you can fully enjoy and learn even if you are not good at drawing.
  • Japanese Language Proficiency:
    • The training will be conducted in Plain Japanese (やさしい日本語).
    • Japanese learners should have a level of proficiency sufficient for everyday conversation and interactive communication.

    • Registration opens on June 20. It will close as soon as the capacity is reached.

Training

  • Basics of Animation
  • Various expressions and techniques in animation.
  • Understanding and drawing storyboards.
  • Setting up (the camera and shooting stage).
  • Facial animation (Hands-on practice using the “Stop Motion Studio” app).
  • Application & Practical Training
  • Deepening storyboards through dialogue.
  • Monologue animation: Combining monologue (spoken thoughts) and movement (animation).
  • Animation review session (watching completed animations together to share feedback and ideas).

What to Prepare

  • Please prepare the following items individually.
  • Equipment & Materials　
    • ●Two devices among smartphones, tablets, or computers with cameras.
    • ●Internet connection.
    • ●Tools and materials necessary for animation production (details will be sent to participants in advance).
    • ●Teaching materials to download and print out (details will be sent to participants in advance).
  • Apps: Please download and install the following software before the training starts.
    • ●Zoom (Free version is available).
    • ●Stop Motion Studio (The free version for Android and iOS is sufficient for the training).

Instructor

  • Ms. Chie ARAI　(Professor, Faculty of Art and Design, Bunka Gakuen University)
  • Hand-drawn animator and illustrator.
  • After working at an animation production company, she went freelance in 2002. Alongside her commercial work, she freely creates and showcases flipbooks, picture books, and video works. Her love for flipbooks led her to organize group exhibitions, which have been held irregularly, mostly in Tokyo, since 2006. Member of the Japan Animation Association (JAA).
  • Co-researcher at Animated Learning Lab.
  • Nickname: のんきさん(Nonki-san)

About “Ani-Connect Animation Connecting Global Youth”

  • This animation training is held as a pre-event for “Ani-Connect”.
  • アニコネ　世界とつながるメッセージアニメ(Ani-Connect Animation Connecting Global Youth) is an evolved version of the “Workshop for High School Students and Japanese Learners,” an international online collaborative learning program that started in 2021 and has brought together over 100 young people from 6 countries.
  • By adding the “Ani-Connect Showcase” to the existing “Ani-Connect Workshop” and “Ani-Connect Exchange,” a new platform is born for creative interaction and cross-border collaboration among an even wider range of youth conveying messages through animation.
  • Ani-Connect Event Schedule
    • Ani-Connect Animation Training: August 8 & 9, 2026
    • Ani-Connect Workshop:
      • Dec 2026 – Feb 2027. A 6-session international online collaborative learning program themed around “Water” for high school students and Japanese learners globally. Free of charge.
      • Applications open on October 1, 2026!
    • Ani-Connect Exchange:
      • Several times during the workshop, guest speakers or activists will be invited to give lectures and interact with Ani-Connect participants.
    • Ani-Connect Showcase:
      • March 2027. The final presentation event where participants and guest speakers present their self-made message animations based on themes like water, environment, and climate change.

Notes regarding Filming, Photography, and Use of Media

  1. The organizer, Animated Learning Lab in Japan/ALLjp (hereafter “the Organizer”), will take photos, video, and audio recordings during this event.
  2. The Organizer may publish these photos, videos, and audio recordings on the internet (including social media) as reports for research, development, and public relations purposes. They may also be published in printed materials, related events, or academic conferences.
  3. When publishing the media mentioned in (2), the Organizer will process the images (such as blurring faces) to ensure individual participants cannot be identified, and participant names will be written using initials only.
  4. If a participant requests the removal of a published photo, video, or excerpt, the Organizer will promptly remove it. However, please understand that printed materials cannot be altered or recalled.
  5. This activity is supported by The Japan Foundation (TJF) Grant Program for Future Generation, and the Organizer will submit photos showing the status of the activity as part of the official report.
